The Old Gaol today

Here stands the Old Gaol at Abingdon, looking a bit forlorn and waiting for its as yet unknown future at the hands of developers. We at COG believe firmly that it is a big mistake for its present owners, the Vale of the White Horse District Council to sell the freehold to a developer, but this is what they have in mind.

If we want to get the Gaol building re-opened for public use -not just as flats or offices - we need local people to show that they care.

Do you have any specific memories of the Gaol as a part of your life in Abingdon? Tell us about them so we can build a picture.

We would also like to hear from anyone who went to see Radiohead there in the mid-90s - or any other landmark performances or shows.

The aims of COG must be achieved. Since the local elections on 3rd May 2007 the Liberal-Democrats have total control of both The Vale and Town Councils and they will attempt to force through their wishes against allcomers. The Old Gaol has been silent and dead for a long time - a clear illustration of what imagination the L-Ds have for this Abingdon asset. The Old Gaol is now an incovenience and L-Ds want to take the "30 pieces of silver" and run. Abingdon needs to wake up to this scandolous neglect.
